The roots of the Carnival of Putignano are, as you know, ancient. Rites, still exist, such as the "Festival of perikaryal", "The Day of the Bear", the " Carnival-funeral" have elements of strong analogy with the original functions of the mediterranean carnival : the reversal of social roles, temporary breaking of the social rules. Even when connected to the medieval origins of the Carnival of Putignano, and therefore the translation of the relics of St. Stephen from Monopoli Putignano and under the auspices of the Knights of Malta December 26, 1394, is further confirmation of how the Putignano Carnival is an event that truly combines the pairing of "Culture and the Mediterranean."
Organizational and social, the Carnival of Putignano is really a party-event in the old sense of the word: a community contributes in varying degrees to produce a new show annually renewing an ancient tradition is still viable.
