The leaning tower of Pisa
The tower of Pisa is the bell-tower of the cathedral.
The construction began in August 1173 and continued (with two long interruptions) for about two hundred years, with full fidelity to the original project, whose author is not known with certainty.

In the past, many believed that the slope of the Tower was an intentional part of the project, but now we know that it is not. The tower was designed "straight" (and even if not pendesse is one of the most remarkable bell towers in Europe), and began leaning during construction.

For its beauty and for its slope, from 1173 to the present the Tower has been the subject of special attention. During the construction there was an attempt to curb this inclination with special design features, with an atempt to replace the columns and other damaged parts and finally, today it is acting on the ground in order to significantly reduce the gradient of Torre, in order to assure it long life.

Pisa is in Tuscany and the capital of the province.

According to a legend was founded by the legendary Trojan refugees coming from the Greek city of Pisa.

The tower is one the most important monuments of the city there is - in the famous square Piazza dei Miracoli, declared a World Heritage site - the marble cathedral built between 1063 and 1118, in the Pisan Romanesque style, with the bronze portal of St Rainier of Bonanno Pisano and the pulpit by Giovanni Pisano. In the square stands the characteristic leaning tower, tower of the twelfth century, 56 meters high, which acquired its characteristic tilt a decade after the start of its construction, now one of Italy's most famous monuments in the world.

There are at least three inclined towers: one, the best known, in the "square of the Miracles" (piazza dei miracoli), and the other one is the bell tower of the church of St. Nicholas, to the opposite of Santa Maria road, near the Lungarno, the third, a halfway of the avenue of Piagge (along the river, located in the east of the city), is the bell tower of the church of San Michele degli Scalzi (in this case not only the tower is panding but the whole the church is pending).

Pisa is home to the largest airport in the region, the "Galileo Galilei", and is home to three of the most important universities in Italy: the University of Pisa, the Scuola Normale Superiore and the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, and many research institutes.
