Leonardo da Vinci's birthplace lies around 3 kilometres from Vinci, in Anchiano, less than an hour by car from Florence.
It has long been thought, based on theories suggested by historian Emanuele Repetti, that Leonardo was born in this country residence on 15 April 1452.The surrounding landscape is still very similar to that which Leonardo would have known as a young boy.
Inside is a permanent educational exhibition that includes reproductions of drawings depicting views of the Tuscan countryside and a map of Valdarno drawn by Leonardo.
The Leonardo da Vinci Museum, in the Palazzina Uzielli and Castello dei Conti Guidi, boasts one of the most complete and original collections of the machines and models invented by the great artist, technician and engineer. Each reproduction is exhibited and explained based on the exact information contained in his rough drafts and manuscripts. The exhibits reflect the diversity of his work, together with a number of drawings through which he expresses his intuition and returns to and improves machines and mechanisms recorded in 15th century technical literature.
The Museo Ideale Leonardo Da Vinci is the first museum which deals with the complexity of Leonardo as artist, scientist, inventor and designer, also in relationship with his life, his territory and the contemporary events: through his painting, his manuscripts, his fingerprints and the use of Leonardo in art and mass-media.
Founded in 1993, it is situated in the fascinating underground gallery and in the ancient cellar of the Vinci Castle. Recently reopened, it is an essential destination for those who want to learn more about Leonardo, because it continuously unveils ongoing research, new works and discoveries and offers an original and complete view of Leonardo.
It exhibits works from the 16th century to the present time: original paintings from Leonardo’s workshop, ancient instruments of his time and territory, e.g. Leonardo’s ritrecine (mill wheel), rare engravings, (including two “Knots” dated 1505-7 by Dürer from a drawing by Leonardo), more than 60 models and machines reconstructed according to his drawings, works related to the “Leonardism” from antiques to autographs by Duchamp.
Its outdoor section the “Garden of Leonardo and Utopia” includes the “Vinci Labyrinth”, the “Path of Different Trees and Flowers” and the “Endless Knot of Roses”
The Museum, with its “Libera Achademia Leonardi Vinci” has opened also a new section in Florence, at the Museo del Bigallo, in the Duomo square.
