The river Po, called the "gentle giant", is the longest river in Italy. With its 650 km (about 400 miles), it runs through the Po Plain and flows into the Adriatic Sea, forming a delta and one of the largest wetlands in Europe and in the Mediterranean Sea.
It is situated exactly on the 45th parallel - the same one for Turin – and it stretches out to the sea like a triangle whose axis coincides with the main branch of Po di Venezia and whose sides run in the north along the Adige river and in the south along Po di Goro. The Po Delta is the most recent stretch of territory in Italy. As a matter of fact, the characteristic protrusion of the northern part of Italy has begun to take shape less than 400 years ago and is continuously evolving.
In the indisputable unique frame of the Po Delta it is possible to find an area created both by the sedimentation of the river and by the work of man who, during the centuries, has controlled its course and drained the land around it. In the Delta area, nature, history, tradition, culture, and art intertwine to offer the visitor an original and surprising landscape.
The area consists of different environments, each one with its own features: the countryside with paleoriverbeds, fossil dunes, embankments, fishing lagoons, lagoons or brackish inlets, and sandbars. Since it is possible to meet these environments coming from the East and following the Po flow, we have chosen the following order to get well acquainted with the Delta area.
In the area of the Delta park there are several cultural acticities and museums open to the pubblic, like for exampe:
Museums and Structures
•National Archaeological Museum in Adria
•San Basilio Cultural Tourist Center
•Ca' Vendramin Regional Land Reclamation Museum
•Septem Maria Museum
•Corte di Ca' Cappello Museum
•Ca' Cappellino Bees Museum / Apiculture Center
•Coastal Botanic Gardens of Veneto
•Ca' Pisani Flood Plain
•Panarella Floor Plain
•Donada Fossil Dunes
•Ariano nel Polesine Fossil Dunes
The Po Delta is an area of extraordinary natural, historical, and geological interest.
Seven river branches open like a fan and form the so-called "Active Delta", rich in different environments, each of them characterized by its own flora and fauna and changing in aspect season after season.
The Taste of the Delta Park
The cuisine and products of Delta Po Park are simple and essential: vegetables, rice, river and sea fish, but above all mussels have always characterized an area that has tried to optimize a territory which, because of the whims of the river Po, it was difficult to manage in the past. On the other hand, it is exactly thanks to the river that the area has become fertile and has enabled the production of quality products like rice, cultivated from time immemorial, garlic, and a niche product like the sweet potato, lately rediscovered also by refined cuisine. However, you cannot visit the Delta without eating fish: mussels and clams, sea bass, sea bream, eels, grilled or in more or less elaborate dishes are served in the local restaurants and trattorias. Moreover, if you really want to discover the Delta, you can experience recreational fishing activities in the channels and lagoons of the Po Delta, observe the mussel farmers working, fish and have lunch with the fish you have caught in the so-called cavane, the traditional fishermen's huts.
Rice is cultivated in the Po Delta from time immemorial: as a matter of fact, the land interested by alluvial phenomena over the years are particularly fertile and constantly benefit from the light sea breeze creating a particular healthy microclimate which, combined with the ancient cultivation systems, makes the local rice a healthy and very nutritious product.
Its cultivation covers an area of about 9,000 hectares: Carnaroli, with pearl-colored and long grains ideal for risotti, Vialone nano, with a larger grain ideal to prepare fish risotto, and Arborio, with smaller and whiter grains. These are the varieties cultivated in particular in the southern area of the Delta, in the Municipality of Porto Tolle.
The Delta Melon. The Po Delta Melon has a scented yellow-orange pulp rich in seeds. It is one of the summer fruits par excellence because, thanks to its elevated water content, is very refreshing. With a generally spherical shape, the Po Delta Melon is produced from June to August, above all in the Municipalities of Taglio di Po, Adria, and Porto Tolle, where, thanks to the particular soil and climatic conditions, it gains a particular taste.
After the harvest, the melon is taken to the local fruit and vegetable markets where it is marked with a special label and sent to the main fruit and vegetable markets. In the latest years, the cultivation of the melon has considerably increased, to the extent that it has become a very widespread product.
In the Delta area nature, history, tradition, culture and art intertwine and offer its guests a wonderful and surprising landscape. The Park truly is the perfect holiday destination for the whole family, for those travelling with friends and even for those who prefer a vacation alone only in the company of beautiful natural environments.
