Characteristics of the Lake:
The Lake of Como, with an area of 146 km. is the third largest Italian lake after Garda and the Verbano. Its characteristic inverted Y shape is given by the three branches: Colico north, Lecco in the south-east, Como in the south-west, with a developing perimeter of 170 km. The maximum length is 50 km. And the maximum width, is 4.4 kilometers.; The minimum , between Careno Torriggia, is 650 m., the maximum depth is 410 m. (one of the deepest lakes in Europe), the average height of the sea is 199 m.
The lake is surrounded by mountains whose highest point is Mount Legnone (2609 m) above Colico. The water courses are 37 tributaries, among which the most important is the Adda, followed by Mera. The Adda is also the only emissary; leaves the lake at Lecco, and having formed the lakes Garlate Olginate it continues towards the river Po
The only isle of the öake is the isle Isola Comacina, located by the branch of Como, opposite the town of Sala Comacina.

Bellagio is the most famous resort. Fogazzaro environmented there his novel Malombra, with the scenes of the movie with the same name (Malombra) by Mario Soldati.
After Blevio, the view of the landscape of Como goes down to the provincial "Lariana". The city has the typical sunset on the lake when the sun set over the hills of Villa Olmo. At night, illuminated stands out the blue dome of the cathedral.

Although the figure of the professional fisherman has almost virtually disappeared, the lake fish is commonly served in restaurants bordering the lake. The typical dish is the Misultin (dried endeavor).
The climate is continental in Lombardy, tempered by the lake water mass. Less mild, however, than by the Lake Garda, and there are small differences from area to area. It's colder in the Como branch (especially in the inner side), is sweeter in the center area of the lake and along the eastern coast Lecco. Precipitation is greatest in the west and in the Triangle Lariano.
The vegetation is devided into elevation zones, with Mediterranean along the coast, oaks and chestnut trees in the hilly area (500-800 meters), beech, fir, larch and mountain pine Mughi. the highest level (up to 2,000 meters) is characterized by junipers, rhododendrons, blueberries and green alder.
Although the lake has remained relatively intact over the last fifty years, the recent phenomenon of the increase housing has met a great opposition by the local population - with the support of the local press - which identifies a residential development as a destruction of the landscape.
