The town Atrani is located just 700 meters away from the famous Amalfi.
A quite picturesque little fishing village, isolated from the traffic, Atrani is the smallest municipality in the whole Southern Italy. The typical white houses, with balconies full of flowers, form a cascade along the ledges of the surrounding hills (Mount Civita towards East and the Mount Aureo towards West), interspersed with lemon groves, in the valley of the river Dragone, as far as the beach. There are no certain traces about the origins of the town's name: according to some, in fact, it derives from the Latin word "atrum" (dark, with reference to its particular geographical location), according to others from an ancient Greek settlement (Atranes).
This small sea town covers a territory of only 1 square km. It is the smallest municipality in Europe. The town is still that of Middle Ages and it is very well kept: narrow streets with vaults and arches, all covered in a white mantle of lime.
Atrani is situated between the sea and the high cliffs, on the narrow valley del Dragone, at the feet of Civita mount and Aureo mount that divides it from Amalfi. Atrani is really delightful with its small beach that the fishing lights leave during the night to go fishing, thus lighting the sea in a very charming way.
Atrani was founded by the ancient Roman aristocracy, and became the wealthy residence of the most powerful families of Amalfi. Unfortunately, the town suffered when Ruggero II, and the Normanni domination began. This was only furthered with the Pisani invasion in 1337, which deprived the entire Amalfi Coast of its independence, and political power.
Atrani, today, maintains it's distinct fishermen's town atmosphere. The main entrance to the town starts from the beach, and from there, the traditional houses climb up the steep mountain valley, intertwined with gardens, and vibrant lemon terraces.
Atrani, like all the other towns of the Amalfi Coast, was the residence of noble Roman patricians, evidenced by the sumptuous villas that archaeological excavations are bringing to light. It was mentioned for the first time in a letter of Pope Gregory the Great, in 596.
During the time of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, Atrani was the residence of local nobles and the ancient Church of San Salvatore de' Birecto was the place were the Doges were crowned with a ducal cap ("birecto").
A few bars have opened in the last couple of years making Atrani's square the place to meet, chat, and learn about different cultures.
Not to miss:
- Masaniello's Cave on the eastern slope of Mount Aureo, where the famous popular leader (Tommaso Aniello d'Amalfi) sheltered, after the Neapolitan insurrection against the Spanish Government in 1647. The mother's home of the famous revolutionary was historically situated not too far from the cave.
- The Grotto of the Saints, not far from the Torre dello Ziro, decorated with frescoes in Byzantine style. This is all that remains of the ancient Benedictine monastery, entitled to the Saints Quirico and Giulitta, founded by Archbishop Leone I in 986.
Atrani is away from traffic, and confusion, even in summer, because it only opens to its beach, and sea. This is probably the secret of its pleasant square, recently preferred by some conosseurs' even to the famous square of Capri.
Staying along the Amalfi coast, means being overwhelmed by unforgettable panoramic views and charming towns. Be it along the impressive hiking trails on top of Monte Lattari or in the numerous small alleys of the coastal villages – Atrani toghether with the Amalfi coast is an area to be discovered and never to be forgotten.
