The Amalfi Coast is the stretch of coast in the region of Campania, located south of the Sorrento Peninsula, overlooking the Gulf of Salerno and borders in the west to Positano and in the east to Vietri sul Mare. It is a stretch of coast known worldwide for its natural beauty, home to major tourist sites. It takes its name from the town of Amalfi, the hart of the Coast, not only geographically but also historically. The Amalfi Coast is known for its diversity: each of the towns of the Coast has its own character and traditions.

The areas and the most interesting monuments to be visited on the Amalfi Coast are: the Cathedral of Amalfi and its cloister (Chiostro Paradiso), the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Positano, the churches of San Salvatore of Birecto and St. Mary Magdalena at Atrani , Villa and Villa Rufolo Cimbrone in Ravello, the churches of San Luca and San Gennaro in Praiano and their view, the Church of San Pancrazio in Conca dei Marini and the view around it, the church of Santa Trofimena and the Roman villa in Minori, the collegiate church of Santa Maria a Mare and the Castle of San Nicola de Thoro Plano in Maiori.

These municipalities along with Corbara and Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino (belonging geographically to Agro Sarnese Nocerino), are gathered together in  the Montana Community of Amalfi (Comunitá Montana, a Italian assosiation for the protection and  development of the towns and villages in mountain-areas ).

Excursion: Trail of the Gods

Starting point: Agerola
Point of Arrival: Positano

Duration: 3 hours and half

The trail, mostly in excellent condition and of medium difficulty connecting Agerola  to Positano. Along a narrow rocky path between fields and forests of oak , but also chestnut woods and vineyards grows high on the sea, up to Colle la Serra (575 m altitude). Here begins more of  a wilderness area, the Grarelle-valley , with many caves and deep coves. Continue to Nocelle, fraction of Positano in a splendid panoramic position. Please note the forum on the mountain from which stems the village. After crossing the whole town, you take the old path Relay Montepertuso (365 m) through the Vallone Porto, a deep gorge with striking limestone walls. From here, some old stairs through olive groves and vineyards and finally take you to the center first and then to the beach of Positano.

The Legend - the popular myth

It is said that the opening in the mountain was made by The virgin Mary to let teh people see the defeat of the evil on the other side of the mountain.
A trail that offers spectacular views over the fabulous coastal and mountain landscapes from Praiano to Capri and Cilento.
Given the duration, a walk of 3 hours is unfit for people not experienced in trekking.
