The Walk of St. Francis / SAN FRANCESCO
St. Francis loved deeply the Rieti valley. There he found refuge from the vanities of the world, he found people simple and close to his message that he tried to communicate to the world, and he found a sweet and luxuriant nature.

St. Francis made the Rieti valley, close to Assisi and La Verna, one of his three homelands. So this beautiful valley surrounded by hills and mountains, was by then called the Sacred Valley.

St. Francis chose the Sacred Valley to fulfill three fundamental act of his life and his spirituality in 1223 took the first nativity of Christianity, the same year he wrote the definitive Rule of the Order, and probably the most tender hymn that is the Song of the Creatures.

The Saint Francis Walk is the path that the He accomplished in the Sacred Valley. By joining the walk you retrace the paths and roads that St. Francis loved, passing through the same spectacular nature that Francis once did. You will live a unique experience of spirituality and purity.

The walk-way, 80 km, opened in December 2003, is divided into eight stages, sanctified by the direct presence of St. Francis.

You can choose if you want to make the trip on foot, mountain bike, or by horse, or even by car (this mode was made possible for all those who have limited mobility). You'll find trails and streets of rare beauty.

The Way of Francis is made even more special by the Passport: a document attesting to your participation in the paths of the Way of St. Francis.

 The Passport
Much like a real passport, is the official document that accompanies the pilgrims along the paths of the Way.
You can get your passport from one of four Franciscan sanctuaries and you must get it stamped in various stages of the Way of St. Francis.

Certificates
At the end of your pilgrimage - and only if you have made it in not less than two days - you can request the certificate directly to the Office of the Pilgrim's Way of St. Francis.

You receive the certificate directly at home which and it demonstrates your participation in the pilgrimage along the paths of the Way of St. Francis.

The Sacred Valley and Saint Francis
The Sacred Valley is a plain, almost circular in its shape, closed along the entire perimeter of hills and mountains, like the Terminillo mountain. In this natural amphitheater are placed the four Franciscan sanctuaries, ideally placed at the four ends of a mysticism cross.

There are many reasons that led St. Francis to Rieti, among them certainly there was the beauty of nature.

The plain is fertile and even today, as in centuries past, it feeds its people. Thus, during the summer, you can see the plane that transforms into a sea of yellow corn.

The mountains are covered by woods, dominated by oak, chestnut trees ,holm oak and hornbeam. A Highest thrive firs, larches and hollies.

The abundant fresh waters of the Sacred Valley are known throughout the world for their purity.
The River Velino
, deep blue, cut across the plain and enters the city of Rieti bringing trout and ducks. Torrents, like the Turano, rushing among rocks and woods. Springs emerge from the soil spectacular as those of Santa Susanna.
