THE HOLY HOUSE OF LORETO
An ancient tradition recounts that the Holy House of Loreto is the same walled Chamber of Our Lady that had existed in
Nazareth, in Galilea, in wich Mary was born, was brought up and received the angelic annunciation.
This tradition, based on devotion and popular credence, ascribed the transportation of the House of Nazareth to an angelic
mission, while recent studies, reading the tradition as were "between the lines"have put forward the hypotesis of a
transportation devised by human agency, by sea, with special assistance from above.
The original nucleus of the Holy House consists of only three walls, because at Nazareth, in the wing where the altar now
stands there had been no wall as that side opened onto the entrance of the grotto.
The lower sections, to a height of almost three metres, of the three original walls consist mainly of rows of gravel stones,
that could be found in Nazareth, while the upper section, wich are later, spurious additions, are made of local brick, the
only building material used in the Marche.
The technique used for the outer finish of some of the stones is similar to that employed by the Nabateans and widespread
in Palestine at the times of the Romans.
About sixty graffiti have been found, many of wich are considered by experts to be similar to those of the Judeo-Christians
in the Holy Land, including Nazareth, of ancient times.
Some consider the Crucifix, painted on wood, set above the so-called Angel's window, that has been dated to the end of the
13th century, to be in the Spoleto manner, while others see in it signs of Giunta Pisano's style.
The Statue of the Madonna was carved in cedar of Lebanon from the Vatican Gardens and was put in place of the 14th century
statue that had been destroyed by a fire in the Holy House in 1921. It was commissioned by Pope Pius XI, who crowned it in
the Vatican in 1922, modelled by Enrico Quattrini and paited by Leopoldo Celani. Since the 16th century it has been garbed
in a mantle called "dalmatic".
The Marble Screen was commissioned by Julius II, who sent Donato Bramante to Loreto in 1507 to do "great things" there and
to "draw many works".
Wark was under the direction of Andrea Sansovino (1513-27), Ranieri Nerucci and Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane. The statues
of the Sybils and of the Prophets were inserted in their niches at a later period.
The Marble Screen consist of a podium with geometrical ornamentations, with a series of lined columns articulated in two
sections, crowned by corinthian capitals supporting a projecting cornice. The balaustrade, by Antonio da Sangallo, cloaks
the ungainly barrel vault of the Holy House and also provides an elegant frame encasing the marvellous edifice.
