L'Aquila -The City of the Eagle- is a city and comune in central Italy, both the capital city of the Abruzzo region and of the Province of L'Aquila. As of 2009, it has a population of 73,150 inhabitants, but has a daily presence in the territory of 100,000 people for study, tertiary activities, jobs and tourism. Laid out within medieval walls on a hill in the wide valley of the Aterno river, it is surrounded by the Apennine Mountains, with the Gran Sasso d'Italia to the north-east.

This beautiful city sits upon a hillside in the middle of a narrow valley; tall snow-capped mountains of the Gran Sasso massif flank the town. A maze of narrow streets, lined with Baroque and Renaissance buildings and churches, open onto elegant piazzas. Home to the University of L'Aquila, it is a lively college town and, as such, has many cultural institutions: a repertory theater, a symphony orchestra, a fine-arts academy, a state conservatory, and a film institute.

L'Aquila is the main historical and artistic centre of Abruzzi, has an archbishopry and is renowned for its University, Musical Conservatory, Arts Academy, Theatre and Concert Society, National Museum of the Abruzzi and the ancient Salvatore Tommasi library.

Formerly a center for handicraft and agriculture, L'Aquila has nowadays become primarily an administrative center for its large province and partly for the region (regional bodies are divided between L'Aquila and Pescara). The economy of the town is characterized by chemical, mechanical and farming industries, the production of wine, cereals, saffron and dairy products, traditional delicatessen and craftswork; the nearby mountains also offer facilities for winter sports and excursions.

The city is also a quite populare skiresort since it is close to the highest of the Apennine summits, L’Aquila is positioned at an altitude of 721 meters in the Valley of the Aterno-Pescara, wedged between no less than four mountain peaks above 2,000 meters.

The mountains block the city off from warm humid air currents from the Mediterranean, and give rise to a climate that is cool in comparison to most of central Italy, and dry. It has been said that the city enjoys each year eleven cold months and one cool one.

L’Aquila is approximately 100 kilometers (63 miles) to the east-north-east of Rome, with which it is now connected by the highway through the mountains.

There are several churches and monuments of historic and artistic value, the heritage of its rich medieval past, such as the Fountain of the Ninety-Nine Spouts, almost a symbol of the city, the massive 16th-century Spanish castle, which crowns the city's highest point, the Basilica of St. Bernardine, the greatest Renaissance church in Abruzzi, and the Church of Saint Mary in Collemaggio, the most outstanding example of Abruzzi romanesque architecture, where Peter from Morrone was crowned Pope in 1294, leaving to the city the unvaluable gift of the perdonanza, celebrated every 28th August since that time.

The fountain of the 99 Spouts; This unique Fountain, that has become almost a symbol of the town of L'Aquila, is certainly one of the best-known monuments in Abruzzi. Historically, the number 99 seems to have been associated to the city and the Fountain some time after the construction.
Location: The monument is situated a few hundred yards from the railway station, in the Piazza San Vito, immediately inside the Porta della Rivera in the XIV-century city walls, opposite the small Romanesque Church of St. Vito. Just like with the Trevi Fountain in Rome, the sound of flowing water is really impressive and can already be heard from afar.
