The inhabitets areas are Sestriere Colle, Sestriere Borgata, and in the valley of Chisone Col du Champlas and Champlas Janvier in the valley of Susa.
The origins of Sestriere is very recent. The town was founded by royal decree in fact October 18, 1934 on land the village Sauze di Cesana, separated from the Municipality of Cesana, the former town of Champlas du Col, who became a village, hamlet and village, separated from the town of Pragelato.
Since 1930 Giovanni Agnelli, the founder of Fiat, which had bought land, for 40 cents a squaremeter, built two hotels (known as the towers) designed by Vittorio Bonadè-Bottino, which follow the themes of Rationalism of the Italian era, with three skilifts/ cable cars, directly to the mountains Banchetta, Sises and Fraiteve.
The administrative life of the town began on January 1, 1935: it was designed a badge for the occasion, with a black band and a green, and in the middle a pair of skis to be the simbol of the winter resort of Sestriere and the first mayor was Paul Frá.
During the thirties were also constructed a new path, a springboard for the ski jump, another hotel, "Principi di Piemonte" and a prestigious 18-hole golf course (the highest in Europe).
This development was interrupted by World War II, which blocked the tourism and damaged the facilities. The reconstruction began in the fifties, led by Giovanni Nasi (nephew of Senator Agnelli and mayor from 1948 to 1980) and there were built new ski lifts and chair lifts.
Since 1967, many competitions are held like the Alpine Skiing World Cup, and in 1997 and in February 2006 hosted the alpine skiing events of the XX Olympic Winter Games.
