A river in history
The North Adda Park includes the territories of the plains through which the Adda river flows, downstream from the lake of Lecco. In this part of the park the river winds through a landscape with unique environmental characteristics.
The park was established in 1983 and has an area of 5580 hectares.
The park includes the coastal areas of the Adda, the stretch that crosses the high
plain, downstream of Lake Como, including lakes and Garlate Olginate. In
this stretch the river winds between banks collected, with typical outcrops of the "strain" and is a characteristic landscape that alternates at times dense forest areas and more populated areas.
The most interesting natural area consists from the wide wetland marsh of Brivio. Particularly relevant are the archaeological and monumental aspects, with the hydraulic engineering of the century as the dams of Leonardo (Trezzo sull´Adda) the Paderno Bridge and the village of Crespi
d'Adda.
The territory is crossed by the river Adda, created following the withdrawal of the glacier
Quaternary in descending from the Alps to the plains. Thanks to it today the park presented as a system of fluvial-glacial terraces. The territory is composed of yellowish-red clay conglomerates and banks of strain that have been eroded by the flow river and created high rock walls. The deposits of more recent times are
material consisting of gravel and sand.
The flora
Here in the park, we find three different kind of areas: wetlands, woodlands and
marshes. The park has a number of wetlands of great importance, some of the most known is Canneto dell'Isola della Torre and Isolone del Serraglio. These wetlands are the remains of the great forest that covered the Padana plains up to the last century and which, because of man and his work and deforestation,
has disappeared. Here on the forest plains there are large trees of various species, including black speaker, Sycamore birches, poplars, willows and oaks, etc. In the marshy areas we find different species of water plants and flowers such as: water lily, wild yellow lily, lily of the valley and many varieties belonging to the Veronica-species.
Fauna
In the marshes we find also different varieties of amphibians and birds: The tree frog, the frog, and the green-colored frog Brunasco, ducks, swans, crows, etc. The more interesting wetland-areas are represented by the Brivo marsh, which is an area of Community interest in which we find the presence of different types of wetland habitats, such as limestone swamp, marsh and magnocariceto-marsh fragmiteto-swamp that also is an important habitat for various species of birds.
