Circeo National Park is situated along the Tyrrhenian coast in the South of Rome, between Anzio and Terracina, and it extends itself for about 8,500 hectares in the Province of Latina, in particular in the Municipalities of Latina, Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo and, for the insular part of the Island of Zannone, Ponza.
Thanks to its establishment when the Pontina area was subject to radical interventions of draining according to the programme of the Integral Reclamation, the whole deforestation of the ancient and inhospitable "Selva di Terracina" was avoided. As a matter of fact, a little part of it was not cut, and together with the Lake of Sabaudia, the Coastal Dune, and the Circeo Promontory it formed the first territorial configuration of the Park. Then Circeo Park has step by step modified the quantity (territorial variations) and the quality (establishment of Nature Reserves and international and environmental awards) of its territorial basis.



The various ambiences of the Park are easily accessible with numerous public roads and routes that cross farming land (wet-zones and farming areas between the forest and the promontory), footpaths (on the promontory and on the island of Zannone), gravelled cycling and walking signposted paths (in the forest), some of which present illustrated signboards (such as the signposted path at the Park visitor’s centre, the path of Remembrance at Cocuzza and the naturalistic path at Villa Fogliano botanical garden) and equipped accesses (dunes). The Park is also extremely accessible to disabled people.

The forest of the Circeo National Park known as Selva di Circe is one of the few forests on the plain which has been better preserved and, with an extent of 3,300 hectares, it is also the widest one of its kind in Italy. It maintains many of the typical features of Selva di Terracina, the ancient coastal forest, which took up more than 11,000 hectares before the drainage carried out during the 1930s.

As we mentioned above the different environments of the National Park of Circeo can be easily reached by several roads, and visited through by public roads and by roads linking one estate to the other (wetlands and other agricultural areas between the forest and the promontory), pedestrian paths (on the promontory and in Zannone), cycling and pedestrian tracks with pathsigns (in the forest), and some equipped paths (didactic path from the Visitor Center, memory path to Cocuzza, sentiero natura "botanical garden" in Villa Fogliano) with informative panels and equipped access (dune).

Moreover, the National Park of Circeo is well-organised as far as handicapped people are concerned, thanks both to its natural plain ground and to the richness in paths which are accessible also with orthopaedic wheelchairs led by guides, and to the presence in the Visitor Center of some structures and equipment (sanitary service, crawler track for stairs) dedicated to specific activities to improve the general accessibility of the paths: for instance, the creation of the sentiero natura for blind people which has been integrated to the sentiero natura "botanical garden" in Villa Fogliano.
