The Islands:
In the lake there are five islands: the largest one is the Isle of Garda on which stands a beautiful eighteenth-century building in in seventeenth-century Venice-style, and near this the second island, the Island of San Biagio, also called "the Rabbit isle", which is about 200 meters from the coast (within walking distance in dry periods). Both are located near San Felice del Benaco, on the coast towards Salò Brescia.
Another island, the third largest is the Isle of TRIMELONI famous for having been a powder keg on which they were collected unexploded ordnance in the first and second world war. The other two, smaller, are the Island of Dreams, also in periods of dry within walking distance from the coast, just 20 meters away (the peninsula of the dream), and the Isle of Olives. There are also a large number of rocks, especially between the islands of the Garda and San Biagio, which depending on the season are more or less visible and are properly marked as they are considered a possible danger to navigators.
Tourism:
The Tourism on Lake Garda started in the late eighteen century, although, of course, it was at that point an elite tourism, and concerned almost exclusively north-western part of the lake, for the good climate, for the water, for variety of products, for the beauty and grandeur of the landscape, courtesy and hospitality of the inhabitants... One of the first tourist resort was Gardone Riviera, where Luigi Wimmer, who fell in love with the place, decided to build a small hotel, unfortunately the hotel wasn´t completed until after his death: this was expanded over the time and became one of the buildings of the luxury Grand Hotel. Around this arose slowly other small hotels and villas, and, after the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio had constructed here the famous habitat Vittoriale degli Italiani, the fame of the place increased further.
At the veronese riviera tourism arrived, however, much later, approximately in the thirties of the twentieth century, with the realisation of the current gardesana road along the eastern shores of the lake (previously in many places, the road deverted from the shore and passed through the mountains instead). And with the arrival of tourists, it was decided to create the "along the lake", a pedestrian paths along the shores of lake, but to achieve it many homes and houses along the shores of the lake were demolished.
Since World War II tourism has had a kind of transformation: the long-stay tourism is replaced by the so called "grab and go"- tourism, with a brief stop on the weekends only, or even for only a few hours. Both types of tourism have been major causes of changes in land and residential areas. In recent years there also other types of tourism has developed, like the hiking, for which they were made adequate infrastructure.
During high season and holidays the traffic of visitors is very intense, and the seaside is now completely saturated, and has almost become one single long city, with villas, hotels, campgrounds and many other tourist buildings, distributed all along lake, so that projects for the futur facility-construction now regards more the internal areas like Monte Baldo, Lessinia, Valpolicella, morainic hills and valleys of Brescia).
