Montepulciano, located in the Val di Chiana of Tuscany, Italy, is one of the most attractive and most loved of the hill towns in the region of Tuscany. It is built on a ridge of Monte Poliziano, a narrow limestone ridge at 605 m above sea level, in the province of Sienna in Tuscany. It is the ancient Etruscan city of Nocera Alfaterna, which in 308 B.C. made an alliance with Rome against the Samnites. In the Middle Ages it was under the control of Florence, but was conquered by Sienna in 1260. The main street of Montepulciano stretches for  no less than 11.5 kilometers from the Porta al Prato to the Piazza Grande at the top of the hill. The cathedral was built in 1619, from plans by Scalzo and until the 18 C it held the tomb of Bartolomeo Arragazzi, secretary of Pope Martin V, a work of Michelozzo. The church of the Madonna di San Biagio was planned by Antonio da Sangallo (1518-37).

The façades of the church of Saint Agostino and of the Oratorio della Misericordia are some of the towns mainsights.
The Church of St. Agnes, really is the monument of patron saint of Montepulciano, who died in 1317. In its modern facade (1926) there is a Gothic portal. The interior of the church was renovated in the 18 C, the nave mostly in the XVII century. Many art works in the church date back to this period, among them the monument where St. Agnes's body rests. Notable also among the civic buildings are the Tarugi palace, like the Mercato, a work of Pignola, the Contucci palace designed by Sangallo and the fourteenth-century Palazzo Municipale, which contains a small gallery of Sienese and of Umbrian art. The most famous men of Montepulciano are Cardinal Bellarmine, Pope Marcellus II, Cervini, Angelo Ambrogini, better known as Poliziano (1454-1494), and the humanist Bartolomeo of Montepulciano. St. Agnes of Montepulciano died in 1137.

The town is encircled by walls and fortifications designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder in the year of 1511 for Cosimo I. Inside the walls, the streets are crammed with Renaissance-style palazzi and churches. But what the town is chiefly known for is its delicious wines the "Vino Nobile di Montepulciano", we´ll get back to  that later...

The Via Roma street
Following the avenue, you reach Porta al Prato where the street Via Roma starts. Following Via Roma, you reach a little square where the "Marzocco", the symbol of Florence's authority
, stands on a column. This lion replaced the "She-wolf", the symbol of of Siena, in 1511 and is the work of the sculptor, Sarrocchi (1856). In front of the column is the Palazzo Avignonesi which is attributed to Vignola and dates back to the 16 C. Its style is pure late-Renaissance. Close to the Palazzo Avignonesi stands the Baroque Church of St. Bernard and in front of the Palazzo Avignonesi there is the late-Renaissance Palazzo Tarugi. Its lower level is characterized by ashlar-work. This building is also attributed to Vignola. Other Renaissance palaces bordering the Via Roma are: Palazzo Cocconi-Del Pecora, designed by Antonio da Sangallo, and Palazzo Buccelli with Etruscan cinerary urns and tablets with Etruscan and Latin inscriptions displayed at its base.

Montepulciano is, as mentioned, famous for not just one but two excellent wines, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Rosso di Montepulciano. However, the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a red wine with Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita status produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montepulciano, Italy. The wine is made primarily from the Sangiovese grape varietal known locally as Prugnolo gentile, (minimum 70%), blended with Canaiolo Nero (10%–20%) and small amounts of other local varieties such as Mammolo. The wine is aged in oak barrels for 2 years; three years if it is a riserva. The wine should not be confused with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, a red wine made from the Montepulciano grape in the Abruzzo region of east-central Italy, and although red wines usually are served with meat disches it goes perfectly also together with fish, salads or even alone or as a dessert wine.
