Pienza is a fantastic example of Renaissance urban design. Often described as the "ideal city" or the "utopian city", it represents one of the best planned of Renaissance towns, where a model of ideal living and government was attempted, based on the concept of a town able to satisfy the needs of a peaceful and hardworking populace. It represented the so-called utopia of the "civitas" cherished by utopian thinkers for centuries. Pienza's location in the centre of the Val d'Orcia, a wonderful and untouched valley, helps the town to embody the fundamental principle that humanistic architecture attempted to encorporate - the balanced relationship between Man and Nature.
The centre of Pienza was completely redesigned by Pope Pius II in Renaissance times. He planned to transform his birthplace into a model Renaissance town. The architect Bernardo Rossellino was commissioned to build a Duomo, papal palace and town hall, and the construction was completed in three years.

Nowadays, Pienza is part of a territorial system called "Parco artistico, naturale e culturale della Val d'Orcia", which aims at preservation of the extraordinary artistic heritage of the five municipalities which constitute it: Castiglione d'Orcia, Montalcino, San Quirico d'Orcia, Radicofani and Pienza.

Some of the most popular mainsights of Pienza is The trapezoidal square, the piazza that is defined by four buildings. The principal residence, Palazzo Piccolomini, is on the east side. It has three stories, articulated by pilasters and entablature courses, with a twin-lighted cross window set within each bay. This structure is similar to Alberti's Palazzo Rucellai in Florence and other later palaces.

Noteworthy is the internal court of the palazzo. The back of the palace, to the south, is defined by loggia on all three floors that overlook an enclosed Italian Renaissance garden with Giardino all'italiana era modifications, and spectacular views into the distant landscape of the Val d'Orcia and Pope Pius's beloved Mount Amiata beyond. Below this garden is a vaulted stable that had stalls for 100 horses.

The Duomo, the Cathedral, which dominates the center of the piazza, has a façade that is one of the earliest designed in the Renaissance manner. Though the tripartite division is conventional, the use of pilasters and of columns, standing on high dados and linked by arches, was novel for the time. The bell tower, however, has a Germanic flavor as is the layout of the Hallenkirche plan, a "triple-nave" plan where the side aisles are almost as tall as the nave; Pius, before he became pope, served many years in Germany and praised the effects of light admitted into the German hall churches in his Commentari. Works of art in the duomo include five altar paintings from the Sienese School, by Sano di Pietro, Matteo di Giovanni, Vecchietta and Giovanni di Paolo. The Baptistry, dedicated as usual to San Giovanni, is located next to the apse of the church.
Pienza is a mecca for the gourmet tourist. It has lots of shops stuffed full of delicious offerings.

Among other things Pienza is famous for producing Pecorino Cheese that is a sheep's milk cheese with a quite strong and a bit spicy taste. There are many shops in Pienza proudly displaying and selling this cheese. As soon as you enter the town you smell the cheese in the air and along the street Rossellino you can meet many shops that sell it, the Tuscan specialties, good wine like Montepulciano and Montalcino and many other good gastronomic specialties, some are really impossible to withstand.

The whole region of Tuscany is famous not only for the good food but also for its stunning scenery, and the area surrounding Pienza certainly lives up to the hype.
It looks like a patchwork quilt, made up of vineyards (ripe with fruit when we were there), olive groves, brown fields ready for planting, and those dark green cypress trees.
