The History of the city of Rimini:
The story of Rimini was launched from the beach... From the Paleolithic, the primitive man has inhabited the area between the coast and the hill of Covignano. Since prehistoric times, on the road of civilization (with th Umbrians, mostly Celts and Etruscans) Rimini led up to become one of the major cities of the Roman Empire.
The first foundations were likely to have reasons of a commercial nature, due to the possibilities it offerd as a landing zone. As a legacy of the Villanovan world, Rimini probably had to find take part of the etruoscan world, which probably was followed by an umbrian and then celtic domain.
There are also traces of contacts with the Aegean world, prooved by the discovery of fragments of Greek pottery. It is believed that the city was regarded as an emprio by the people of Aegina.
The arrival of the Celts was not necessarily very violent, but there was an occupation of the area by the Gauls Senoni, which continued their march southward, occupying most of the region Marche and then coming to occupy, although for a short period, Rome it self.
The Celtic heritage is not visible now, but thanks to this occupation that the city grew in importance and became one of the largest ports of the Adriatic, along with the nearby Ravenna. This growth, decreed the end of the fortune of another important city, situated on the mouth of the river Po, the city Spina.
Around the third century, the city of Rimini came to find itself in the midst of the conflects between the Samnites and the Gauls against the Romans.
