The Italian Regional Natural Park of Monte San Bartolo is one of four reserves in the Marche region in central Italy. It was established in 1994 and is located near the Adriatic coast in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, touching the two municipalities of Gabicce and Pesaro.
What makes this park important is the particularity of its territory, since the entire Adriatic coast cliffs and caves are very rare beeing a small promontory. Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy mention this for their incredible steepness.
These hills emerge from the low sandy coast of Romagna and the Marche and have a narrow beach made up mostly of gravel deposits from the collapsed walls above.
Is a very particular type of stone, called golden yellow Cogolo that once was here taken to later be used in the paving of many nearby cities. This activity is no longer allowed because most likely causes the acceleration of the erosion.
The steep cliffs here are a beautiful example of a stratigraphic formation of the Messinian period.
Natural Fauna
The historic eagerness of the people for the land of Pesaro, along with the sweetness of the slopes, have meant that the land was cultivated in almost all parts until recently.
For this reason until the early 90s the presence of large mammals was limited until the fawn in natural expansion throughout the province, also arrived in the park and found it suitable for its mosaic and variation of cropland and woods.
Among other mammals we can mention the fox, who also attended the beaches to feed on stranded marine organisms, there are also badgers, porcupines, weasels, hares and dormice.
The park also hosts various species of reptiles and amphibians, but the protected area is important for the presence, and especially the migration of many species of birds.
Among the important attendance is recorded that the peregrine falcon, after decades of absence, he returned permanently to populate the cliff. The prestigious predator has nested on the cliffs overlooking the sea. Lovers of birds and birdwatchers can admire the great show every year of the passage of many migratory birds such as buzzard, marsh harriers and a very rare species: the pallid harrier, which is then nested in Eastern Africa East.
Significant from the standpoint of nature is also the wintering seabirds along the coast, such as greater merganser, cormorant, great crested grebe and little grebe, and in the coldest winters, the 'eider, as well as to many species of gulls, including in some samples of saffron, seagull, gull, common gull and the real one. In the area of the mouth of the river and bay leaf Flaminia also wintering herons, little egret and sometimes royal swans.
Some species of shorebirds also frequent the beaches during the winter, among them the sandpiper and the Common Sandpiper.
The long-eared owl and the common owl nest regularly, and takes advantage of the constant degradation of abandoned houses and settle here.
