The Bioparco of Rome is one of the oldest zoos in Europe, founded in 1911. It currently hosts nearly 1.000 animals, belonging to over 200 different species. Mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds live in one of the most charming botanical gardens in Rome, with more than 1.000 trees, some of which are very rare and very old.
Bioparco of Rome is the place for everyone, big and small, who want to spend a day in the most beautiful city in the world, and at the same time close to a world fa far away ... Here you can breathe the air and meet animals from far distant lands such as the magnificent pair of Asiatic lions.
The male is called Asoka and comes from the Chester Zoo in England.
He was born in October 1998 and arrived at the Bioparco in 2008, and Leoness Jada, a female born in September 2002. When you are near the Bioparco bend the ear and you can hear the roar of Asoka even from a distance of 8 km!
You will have the pleasure of meeting the funny Lemur catta. They are highly social animals that live in the wild only in Madagascar and are characterized by their acrobatics, the fun and games and their typical yoga postures for sunbathing.
The group of lemurs here at the bio-park consists of 5 females and 1 male:
Unfortunately many of the animals that you can meet the bio-park in Rome, have had ups and downs because they are victims of illegal trade in the hands of crude and unscrupulous traffickers. But, precisely for this reason, they are now the mascots of the Zoo and here they with their stories have become ambassadors of their natural habitats. Here you will meet all kinds of animals, sizes and all races. Like the Favorites of children are the Asian elephant, the giraffe, the hippo. Or the King of Carnivores like the tiger and the lion, the wolf and the leopard. And herbivores such as zebra and the camel, Reptiles such as pythons and anacondas and of course also many of the smaller animals, but not the least important. Due to their small size in fact, often they require more care and attention than the larger animals.
The real sweethearts of the park are undoubtedly the new puppies, like the newborn giraffe, born on a lovely spring night and was called Gina by children. Or like the twins of the Lemur, it is a male and a female.
At birth, which occurred March 26, 2011, the two cubs weighing about 50 grams each . The twins spend a lot of time clinging to her mother, from time to time deviate under her watchful eye. Or as the male puppy of the collared mangabey (Cercocebus ATyS lunulatus), a quite uncommon event in a zoological facility for this species of monkey.
The baby was born last November 7 from mom and dad Mongomo Ashante and was unfortunately rejected by his mother, which is something that sometimes may occur with this species.
Summer Camp Center 2011 at Rome BIOPARK!
The Summer Camp Center is open all summer, except for the week of August (15-19 August) until September 9, 2011. In an environment as unique as the Zoological Garden (Bioparco) of Rome, every day the children make a journey to discover the animals, observing them and learning about their habits, and participate in a wide variety of recreational activities, recreation and socialization with natural laboratories, sports, theatrical expression, manuals and creative activities. In addition, the young participants test themselves in the care of the garden and make educational visits to the Farm pets.
In recent years the concept of zoos has changed. Zoos today are not “museums of exotic animals” but structures that focus on:
- conservation of endangered species by joining international reproduction in captivity programmes
- environmental education by planning environment-related activities, conventions, exhibitions, educational routes for schools and so on.
The Biopark is the right place for every occation, Wheather you are looking for a quite walk in a beautiful park, a weekend-trip to rome with the whole family, or looking for something special for the kids like Birthday parties and Summer camps for children
