Naturalistic Rarities and Human Works of Art

Mountain of Majella (called Padre dei Monti - The Father of Mountains - by Pliny the Elder and Montagna Madre - Mother Mountain - by the people of Abruzzi) is a high, imposing, wild mountain group which is part of the world heritage of National Parks. The Park consists of four main elements: Majella, a wide and compact calcareous massif, Morrone, Porrara, and Monti Pizzi, with the valleys and the karst planes interposing between them. This National Park is unique for several factors, such as its geographical position, harshness, extension, and climatic changes. It also includes widelands with peculiar wilderness features, the most precious and rare part of the biodiversity national heritage, important not only at a European, but also at a world level.

Majella National Park is characterized by a territory dominated by mountains: as a matter of fact, the 55% of it is over the 2,000 meters. It includes widelands with particular wilderness aspects, the rarest and most precious part of the biodiversity national heritage.
At the moment - as far as we know - the Park houses over 78% of the species of mammals (except Cetaceans) living in Abruzzi, and over 45% of the Italian species. Considering the lack of data on some numerous groups like insectivorous species and chiropters, the Majella Park is a real "hot spot" for biodiversity conservation also in these fields.

In all the seasons of the year, the Park offers the visitor a changeable setting of extraordinary beauty.
Late spring is the season of blooming and, together with autumn, the best period to visit towns and hermitages. Summer is the best season to go along the trails. October will enchant you with the thousands colors of the beech trees and leads to winter which, with its white blanket, makes the landscape particularly charming.
The diversity of the environments, the richness of nature, the evidences left by the human presence make Majella the ideal place to go hiking, an activity giving the visitor the opportunity to discover the most concealed aspects of the area.
The itineraries for trekking-lovers are sometimes long and tiring; those mainly developing in the high mountains are less tiring but nevertheless demanding, both for the climatic conditions and the orienteering difficulties. Therefore, it is recommended not to abandon the trails marked by the Park and to rely on the experience of qualified staff both to obtain information and to be guided during your tours.
The entrance to the Park is free.

Marsican brown bear

The Marsican Brown Bear has always lived, even with numerical variations during the years, in the Majella National Park territory. At present, it can be stated that about 4-8 specimens are permanently living inside the Park territory. During the last decades have been sighted, even if rarely, some females with their cubs.
The existence of several and contiguous National, Regional Parks and Nature Reserves enables the shifting of this plantigrade from an area to another one. Hence, the interconnection of these areas plays a fundamental role, especially in the Southern sector of the Park where the presence of this species is stronger.
In 2001 Majella National Park, acting in accordance with “Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga” National Park, set up a research project aimed to define the situation of available food and environmental resources for this species on both Parks territories. The project has been closed within the first months of 2003 through the settlement of some interventions, which have been carried out during the following years. The last target of these activities was the stabilization of population and the reintroduction in those areas where the bears lived until the XIXth Century..

Appennine Wolf

The Wolf, chosen as symbol of the Majella National Park, is the most representative animal of this territory that always saw the coexistence of "shepherd" man with this predator.
At the beginning of Seventies it has been regarded as a dying species because of the persecution committed by the man; today, thanks to a series of favourable conditions - among which the creation of protected areas, the neglect of sheep farming and the increase of selvatic herbivores - the territorial expansion and the numerical growth of the wolf are encouraging elements for the future of this animal.
It is a very important and positive sign, even if in the future, it will have to stem the clash between the man and this animal through activities that aim to promote a positive image of this predator.
The Park, according to the Federative Agreement made with the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga, began a research project that will last two years, in order to fix the picture of available food resources for this great predator. The last target will be the planning of several interventions, which will be carried out in the territories of these Parks in the next years, in order to increase the numerical growth of the wolf.

Abruzzi Chamois

The Abruzzi Chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica ornata) is a glacial relict coming from Asia that suffered an isolation period during the last glaciation. This factor distinguishes it from Alpine Chamois and it makes one of the most important species on Majella.

This animal survived the extermination the man committed. Only in the Abruzzo National Park, with few dozens of specimens, the Chamois colonized again our mountains thanks to reintroduction activities - "Operation Chamois" - carried out in the care of WWF Italy and Abruzzo National Park. Today we are lucky to have, inside our Park, this great animal thought as "the most beautiful Chamois in the world".
