The idea of building the largest city of cinema in Europe came from Luigi Freddi, head of the Directorate General for Cinema of that time. The project was entrusted to the engineer and the architect Gino Carlo Roncoroni Peressutti.
Initially, an area of 600,000 square meters, there are 73 buildings including 16 studios, 40,000 square meters of streets and squares, 35,000 sqm of gardens, and all the technical departments necessary for the production and film: from the first shooting to the finished work. This is a complex that is totally self-sufficient. The impulse given by Cinecittà national production is considerable: in 1943, in just six years over three hundred films were made. Directors such as Alessandro Blasetti, Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica, Luchino Visconti with the films they have created the myth of Cinecitta, consolidated around the world by the art of Federico Fellini.
In the fifties, with the arrival of American filmmakers, Cinecittà becomes Hollywood on the Tiber and its potential are used for the construction of large sets as those of "Quo Vadis?" (1949), directed by Mervyn LeRoy, or "Ben Hur" (1958), directed by William Wyler.
